L@TE: Friday Nights @ BAM/PFA: Brontez: It’s an Underwear Thing
L@TE: Friday Nights @ BAM/PFA: Brontez with Brilliant Colors
(Doors 5 p.m., DJ 6:30 p.m.)
Programmed by Betty Nguyen
You may know Brontez Purnell as the guy in his underwear from local Gravy Train!!! fame, but did you know he's been dancing since he was nineteen? His influences include 1960s avant-garde choreographer Yvonne Rainer's fluid movements, combining narrative and daily repetitive actions; people-watching on his Oakland block; and Janet Jackson. Brontez with Brilliant Colors will showcase a new body of work by the Brontez Purnell Dance Company that combines dance choreography with dance films shot in Super 8: Itzel, Whenever I Get Off the Floor I'm a Total Fucking Hurricane, Free Jazz, and The Beats Are Falling Down. Brontez keeps it punk and street, performing without costume around creative set elements. As part of the participatory piece Free Jazz, Brontez will teach you some moves, too. As if that weren't enough, the evening will feature original scores created by Purnell in collaboration with Taji Maalik. With opening band Brilliant Colors and DJ Myles Cooper.
