Salomon Arts Gallery is pleased to present the artist Claudio Castillo new-media Exhibition entitled “Its About Time…”
Impermanent Art or Generative Art is non-linear, random, and self-generating. Castillo has taken his watercolor paintings and split them into individual layers. Each layer has been animated independently, and then all layers have been put back together and programmed to perform in a random, non-linear progression. The tides and lunar phases are pre-programmed to follow their real world counterparts. The computer is used as a sequencer and compositor. It is not creating any of the art but simply arranging and displaying it. Unlike video art, generative art is constantly regenerating itself and creating unique compositions that have one chance of repetition in 400,000 to 8 trillion years.
In Reactive Art, the weather, news and stock markets drive the compositions in real time by receiving feeds through the Internet. Mr. Castillo’s work creates itself as a reaction to real world, live data. The artist has created all the variables and lets the individual feeds create the appropriate imagery. For example, in the case of the weather piece (GTMO Landscape), multiple animated variables of heat, wind, humidity, and cloud cover, precipitation and time of day have been created. When the artwork receives weather information for any given city, it composes the image that most closely fits the incoming data. The news piece (Proof of Life/ End of Media) combines real time RSS News Feeds and stock market feeds together in one piece. The foreground palm tree changes in reaction to the market; green is up, red is down, normal is closed or even. Through the artist’s website the collector can change the city location or stock market index which is controls the artwork.
Claudio Castillo was born in Havana, Cuba, raised in Europe, and lives in Miami. He has been painting and exhibiting watercolors for over thirty years.
