FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Presented by HANG ART Gallery, Genius Loci is an exhibition by artist Katja Leibenath. This solo show marks Leibenath’s first at HANG ART. Referring to the endemic spirit of a location, this show concept is inspired by the China Basin neighborhood of San Francisco. Her richly colored oil paintings are multi-layered, echoing the timelessness of this rarely explored area.
Leibenath begins her paintings on location, drafting and sketching scenes that inspire her. Once relocated to her studio, she draws upon her memory and spontaneous intuition to complete the works. Leibenath’s direct visual recollection coupled with her experiential memory shapes each painting. Her educational background in Architecture is evident within each composition, which is based on the theory of form and line. It is her familiarity with the area of origin that builds each canvas surface, and her imagination and reminiscence that complete the thoughtful intent. From the saturated and vivid under-paint to the finishing details and drips, each painting allows the audience to create experiences of their own.
Originally from Düsseldorf Germany, Leibenath has been painting in San Francisco since 2006. Her work has been showcased at numerous venues, including SomArts Gallery (SF), Mina Dresden Gallery (SF), The Lab (SF), Liquid Spaces (SF), Huff Harrington Gallery (Atlanta), and Nahcotta West Gallery (Los Angeles).
HANG ART is located at 567 Sutter Street, between Mason and Powell Streets. Gallery hours are Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. For further information or high-resolution images, please call 415-434-4264.
