Kevin Box "Flight of Folds" sculpture show

Kevin Box casts bronze so delicate it looks like paper. Cranes, ponies, planes, boats, stars - his sculptures resemble origami and are rich with meaning. Visitors may be most familiar with the Box-Cullar collaboration, “Rock Paper Scissors” which stands outside our gallery. In this exhibition, the artist unveils his latest works, including a 21 inch tall white bison cast in bronze.

The choice to emulate the look of paper in his bronze works is very deliberate. Paper is receptive, blank, open. It willingly accepts our ideas. For Kevin Box, the receptive nature of a blank sheet of paper, rich with possibilities, is a metaphor for the human soul.

Box begins his work in paper. He folds, crimps and smoothes his paper maquettes, creating not only objects, but also intricate patterns of lines and creases. In this way, the paper itself becomes a unique revelation. Once he is satisfied with an experiment, the paper is then cast into bronze, aluminum or stainless steel. Box’s sculptures range in size from miniature to monumental. His work is both playful and profound.

The exhibit opens July 9th with a talk by Box and Dr. Robert Lang, and internationally recognized expert on Origami. Dr. Lang designed the paper version of the White Bison which Box later created in bronze. The two will speak about their collaboration from 4-5pm on Friday evening. A reception follows from 5 - 8.

Please come and enjoy listening to this articulate and talented man as he shares his work and his vision.

An additional presentation will be given on Saturday, July 10th. Contact the gallery for times.
