Presented by HANG ART, Andrzej Michael Karwacki’s solo exhibition examines the concept of liminality as a form of expression. “Liminality” comes from the Latin word “limen” meaning “threshold”. It denotes a place of transition where the normal limits of thought and self-understanding relax. Liminal represents a creative process where an artist suspends judgment and works through the absence of structure towards a creative breakthrough. Each of the artworks creates a limitless spatial experience. Much like the evening dusk, which is neither night nor day, these paintings come into being through light and color. Emerging from in-between the boundary of neither/nor, they arrive at the place where aura’s blend and experiences form unannounced, like creativity itself.
The Liminality Series are paintings composed of translucent tones, forming and layering lucid images of surfaces and landscapes. Karwacki transposes the flatness of the canvas with dynamic, contemplative depths formed from his rich color palate. Each work becomes a place where boundaries dissolve and the viewer is left on a threshold of endless possibilities.
Born in Poland, Karwacki lived in the neighborhood of a 12th Century castle and was surrounded by the beauty of open parks and nature as a child. He moved to New York and received a BFA in painting and Masters in Urban Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Living in the Bay Area since 1994, Karwacki has a broad creative practice - he is a freelance designer, landscape architect and teacher. Karwacki currently studies Guided Imagery and Expressive Art Therapy at the San Francisco Institute for Health and Healing at CPMC.
Karwacki’s work has been acquired by many private collectors throughout the United States. His paintings are shown in LA, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Paris and London. He has been published by the New Yorker, ArtBusiness.com, NY Uppereast.com, Dalkey Archive Books, SF Weekly and SF Station.
