The original Womanhouse Project in Los Angeles in 1972 was one of the \;most important and famous art projects in feminist art histor y. It \;included some of the first major instances of installation art and of \;feminist performance art in the United States. The artists inc luded in A \;&ldquo\;Womanhouse&rdquo\; or a Roaming House? &ldquo\;A R oom of One&rsquo\;s Own&rdquo\; Today \;address questions similar to th ose posited by the original exhibition\, but through a contemporary lens: W hat is the space necessary for an artist to make art in and for whom? Rathe r than a &ldquo\;Womanhouse&rdquo\; ought we now to envision a Rooming Hous e or a Roaming House? What are the implications of the gendering of space\, who owns domestic space\, and is creativity more a private pursuit or a pu blic one?

\n\n

 \;

\n\n

The exhibition includes forty artists working in all media: video\, photography\, photographed performance\, pai nting\, sculpture and installation\, and opens up a discourse\, sometimes o vert\, sometimes oblique about what the home means now for the woman artist and for women at all economic levels of society.
