August is the toughest month to find a gallery exhibition that will inspire most critics’ fingers to pound the keyboard. With so many galleries closed, and others emphasizing the coming season’s first exhibition in early September, there tends to be a general lack of interest in mounting a show, especially anything substantive. However, there are some good gallery exhibitions here and there, one being “It’s Always Summer on the Inside” at Anton Kern Gallery in Chelsea. Organized by Dan... [more]

“I really love the way the camera fucks up things unpredictably,” Kiki Smith remarked to curator Elizabeth Brown in 2007. Redirecting the way Kiki Smith’s work has historically been understood, Elizabeth Brown’s “I Myself Have Seen it” was first shown last year at the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington, Seattle, and is now at Northwestern University’s Block Museum until mid-August. “I Myself Have Seen It” is the first large-scale survey of Smith’s photographic work across her... Kiki Smith always seems to impress us, which, by everyone’s admission, is not an easy task. Whether working in print, paint, sculpture, glass, wallpaper –you name it–, Smith continues forging an unadulterated path of excellence. The very busy artist, who also has a companion solo show (Sojourn) up at the Brooklyn Museum, has produced a series of hand painted stained glass panels for her first major New York gallery exhibition in eight years. Amounting to nearly 30 large works,... [more]

In an era where our relationship with books seems to be drifting away, where most of reading has become mechanistic and a means of acquiring information and conditioned by the quickness of the ever-changing technology, the Art of the Artist Book takes us on an other-worldly journey to a place where the book is treated as a precious and aesthetic focal point for sharing intimate feelings, inspiration, dreams, social commentary and memory. The artwork in this exhibit is excitingly diverse in... [more]

Girls’ Club in Fort Lauderdale presents Set to Manual, an opinionated look at artworks characterized by intense personal manufacture. Works by more than twenty-five artists range from hand-painted animation and hand-altered 16mm film, to pricked paper drawings and artists’ books, from free-wheeling collage and assemblage to site-specific installation and more. The works on view in Set to Manual were developed and refined by the artists’ hand at every stage of creation. Lavish investment in... [more]

Antony Hegarty, the lead singer of Antony and the Johnsons, who has soared to cult prominence with his otherworldly, transgendered performances, has brought together 6 artists for this debut curatorial effort. Upon entering the gallery, we find a poem, lyrics really, from which the title is taken.  This poem describes a pre-birth experience from within the womb of seeing 6 stars which then trail the author's life after birth.  This poem sets the tone for this exhibition by calling forth...       Haunch of Venison’s first show at Burlington Gardens is a spectacular one—not only for the chance to check out the gallery’s new digs—but for the chance to experience contemporary art through an anthropological eye. It is a group show of epic proportions, featuring eleven themed rooms and works in almost every nook and cranny of the building—in the entrance hall, on the landing and even hanging from the ceiling above the double staircase.     It is in the tradition of collectors... Puppets, puppetry and the like are often relegated to being an obscure subgenre of the theater or sometimes of the art world but the exhibition, currently on view at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, points out the fact that puppets frequently infiltrate popular culture and bring along with them issues that loom large like agency, control, miniaturization and manipulation. These issues are explored by a wide range of internationally recognized artists who have created work that incorporates the... [more]
