An unanswered question a day keeps the doctor away or something on those terms. The apple, if you will, of art seems to be the never-ending meditations on its existence, value, and purpose in the form of the unanswered question: What is art? Curator René Block hits us up with this query once again with , a cooperative exhibition between TANAS and n.b.k. in Berlin. The exhibition serves as a farewell gesture to TANAS, a non-commercial project space, as it closes its doors after its five years... [more]

Doubt is a concept close to my heart (for all the right – and wrong reasons). It is a state of being separated from fixed ideas, moving into a region where certainties flicker out like an ageing fluorescent strip. I feel this movement into doubt is a primary activity of art: simulation, illusion, questioning, all the while leaving the audience open to new thoughts and ways of thinking. The artist does things and I ask: “Why are they doing this?” Doubt is a region of productivity, of... [more]

Conceptual artists illuminate the obvious by withholding meaning. They find the menace that lurks in the everyday utterance of people who keep things from each other. A show at Jocelyn Wolff Gallery in Paris is devoted to Ján Mančuška, the Bratislvan artist who died in June, at 39, from complications of a rare blood disease. Rather than the scheduled show of his works, the gallery decided to pay homage to him through the works of others.  In his creations, Mančuška played with conceptions of... [more]

Not much is likely to be written about Arrow Factory’s ‘Collection Highlights’; this is not because it is a bad exhibition or lacks interest. Paradoxically, it is the nature of the venue itself that has propelled it forward as one of Beijing’s few truly ‘alternative’ art sites (as Robin Peckham pointed out in an earlier ArtSlant review) and at the same time, keeps anything beyond a small returning audience at a distance. Others remain aware of Arrow Factory’s activities - and excited by them -... [more]

The difficult question of what should be the inaugural exhibition of the newly extended South London Gallery is cleverly resolved in Nothing is Forever. It is all about the building. The garden. The café. The flat for artists residencies. All have been treated to artistic intervention of the oldest kind, bringing together wall paintings, drawings and text pieces by 20 British and international artists. The original gallery floor was designed by Walter Crane in the 19 century and... [more]

The state of the world upsets the artistic production, and even the way we interpret works of art. After years of glitter and cynicism, brutality and violence surround us while we wait and hope for a humanist bright spell. The show won't feature any image of armed conflicts, of social or economic crises, no idea for a social redemption. It will only try to underline how the global situation reflects on the artists (or on the artworks). A partial and biased collective show in which... [more]
