Something unusual is happening to visitors’ attentions in the Van Abbemuseum’s fourth and final installment of Play Van Abbe, an 18-month exhibition program considering artists and exhibition makers as diverse “players” within the museum. The current exhibition adds further players to the roster, putting the museum-going behaviors of viewers up for scrutiny. There’s no shortage of art that relies on or even exploits the viewer, but here it’s the exhibition using its visitors. The artwork on the... [more]

It was hard to not feel that the exhibition “Beds,” at ShangART, was just a lazy attempt to showcase a number of old works of 13 gallery artists done over the past 15 years.  While the putative theme of the show might have provided some unity of focus for the choice of works, it didn’t even attempt this feat and, to the contrary, the idea of “beds” never rose to the level of theme, yet alone, concept.       FEINKOST is pleased to present the group exhibition entitled “Communism Never Happened”. Taking its title from a work by artist Ciprian Mureşan, the show explores different modes of archiving, processing, assimilating and forgetting. Do math equations in your head. In Mureşan’s work the title phrase was cut from vinyl records of propaganda. This now unconfirmable recording functions here as a revised text, the original source compromised to convey new information. Legibility of text... [more]
