2233 South Throop #611B
Born (1969) and raised in Chicago’s South side Back of the Yards neighborhood, James Jankowiak has crafted the knowledge and skills honed from his early years as a graffiti artist and applied them to his full-time endeavors as a professional artist, teaching artist and activist.
James’ current paintings and installation focuses on the role of color and the symbiotics of familiar form as a means of communication in our day to day environment. He has led numerous permanent public art projects both within Chicago Public Schools and neighborhood streets. James was recently commissioned to design artwork for the CTA’s newly constructed Union Station Transit Center, recently completed in the summer of 2016.
He has also been a dedicated teaching artist with the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago's Learning and Public Art Programs since 2003, focusing on introducing contemporary practice to Chicago Public School students and facilitating professional development programs for art teachers across the city. Known for his dedication to young people, he was chosen to design the permanent entrance artwork for the Illinois Holocaust Museum’s Youth Museum in 2011.
