Devon Reiffer

Through an additive and reductive process, I create contemporary drawings on canvas with layers of charcoal and gesso. The content, palette, and scale echo the daunting issues that surround sexual orientation, gender, and identity. The infinite shades of gray defy the black and white labels that are embedded into our society. As the gray area presents itself on the surface of the work, I wish only to provoke an honest conversation that elicits empathy and compassion. Regardless of our differences, communication reminds us that we are all human. I am an artist for social change.
Upon completion of her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2014, Devon was awarded the Fellowship Trust Award for the visual impact of “The Gray Area”. She has since exhibited at local Philadelphia galleries including Fjord, Hooloon, William Way Center and has participated in various national group shows including Hamilton Street Gallery’s March 2016 “A Man’s World", Piante Gallery's 2015 "(Dis) Comfort", and Blue Line Art's 2014 "Politically Charged exhibitions. Reiffer was recently featured as a spotlight artist for The Missing Slate and will be included in 2016-17, winter edition of Studio Visit Magazine.
