Much has been said about the so-called “Belgian collector.” For captains of industry and local dentists alike, collecting contemporary art almost seems to be part of the Belgian DNA—which explains why the country is reputed for having the highest concentration of art collectors per square kilometer. Yet, as more and more Parisian collectors make the move to Brussels, the Belgian collector is becoming increasingly French. In addition to Art Brussels’ , the strong presence of collectors in... I saw a wonderful thing at the mall the other day. I was standing outside the supermarket when five models wearing replica Yves Saint Laurent Mondrian dresses walked by, each leading a pure bred dog in tow. I readily joined the parade of people accumulating behind these designer dog walkers, and followed them throughout the mall where they would occasionally pause, cue music, perform choreographed poses, then move on. Let’s take a step back. Hoog Catharijne, where I spied these models, is... [more]

On the face of it, this exhibition, Néon. Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue? is just plain fun. With the Maison Rouge all lit up in different colored neon lights, both industrially produced and hand-crafted  tubes bringing the walls to life, inviting us to walk into spaces saturated in impossible colors. A visit to Néon is ostensibly a joyful, light way to spend an afternoon. Then as we quickly realize, neon has more to it than meets the eye. Neon lights may look pretty, but they... [more]

IT’S EVERYWHERE! I suspect that many of us have experienced those quirky incidents where a hitherto unfamiliar subject is brought to our attention and then it suddenly seems to pop up everywhere. And I mean everywhere. We keep tripping over the now-familiar subject as if making up for lost time.  I first came across Gustave Courbet’s 1866 painting L’origine du monde (Origin of the World) about a year ago when researching material for my upcoming artist residency in Paris. Let’s be frank; once... [more]

For REGIFT New York artist and Swiss Institute Director John Miller chose the works and commissioned a total of 25 artists. The artists handle the subject of gift exchange in its many arrays including appropriation, value, potlatch (recirculation) and reciprocity. It is a very intriguing art show, with many multi- layered background stories. As objects, many of the artworks summon the surreal, existing as darling momentos generously on view for the public.Jamie Isenstein has bestowed props... [more]

Sylvie Fleury at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac - Paris November 29th, 2008 - January 10th, 2009
Posted 12/15/08
Within steps of the front entrance to Galerie Thaddeus Ropac, we are treated to the video documentation of an unusual vernissage/hanging: the sassy sashays of models parading down a catwalk, sporting non-descript workers' jumpsuits, spiked-heel black boots, and Amy-Winehouse-looking hair and make-up, carrying Sylvie Fleury's paintings like designer handbags, with black backgrounds and action-painting splashes of precious metals, silver, gold, and bronze.  Accompanied by the obligatory...
