Entering the three-floor exhibition currently on view at the New Museum, everything immediately slows down. The lights are dim, colorful projections hitting almost every wall and surface, illuminating people and subsequently turning them into shadows. Some visitors sit, splayed out on a plush carpet to watch the wall-to-wall two-channel video projections, while others drift through flowing gauzy curtains, a soft warbling tune flooding the air. This digital playground is Pipilotti Rist’s the... [more]

Entering . On Violence, the viewer passes through two of the four rotating gates in Daniil Galkin’s installation Tourniquet. Beyond this eerie passage, a provocative text speculates on the impact of technology on modern warfare. Its thesis can be characterized as follows: since modern technology has largely emancipated warriors from a traditional active sense of duty—allowing them to literally fire and forget—does this change in confrontation halt the production and inevitable perception of... Rituals, wigs, scarves, make-up and so many other constraints determined the life of women for Centuries, between concealment, unveiling and revealing. From the inferiority of women’s status in certain of yesterday’s and today’s societies, to the liberation of women, from their dissimulation behind various models of veils and clothes (veil, scarf, abaya, burqa, chadri, haik, hijab, jilbeb, khimar, niqab, chador,…), to the destitution shown in the media: what are the realities and the...         Of course nobody’s shocked anymore. Well…maybe a few of the oldest of Old Guard Palm Beachers. Worth Avenue, their Via Condotti-like turf has suffered some bone-chilling temperatures recently, and then there are those stock market reversals. If that’s not shock enough, along comes the Gavlak Gallery to heat things all the way up to sizzling with Think Pink, a new show curated by formidable New York collector, curator and art-party hostess, Beth Rudin DeWoody. Pipilotti Rist at Hauser & Wirth Zürich August 29th, 2009 - October 17th, 2009

Pipilotti Rist will create a kind of domestic fantasy for her exhibition at Hauser & Wirth Zürich. The ground floor galleries will be transformed by the artist into her dream living room - a space whose walls, floors and furnishings are alive with images. Rist's video installations take many guises. She has likened them in the past to handbags, ‘because there is room in them for everything: painting, technology, language, music, lousy flowing pictures, poetry, commotion,... [more]

MOCA at the Pacific Design Center currently has an exhibition of artist books.  Unfortunately the books are under glass vitrines, but you CAN watch the pages turn through MOCA's website at: http://www.moca.org/openbook/sequences.php - a virtual read. The exhibition features books by Sigmar Polke, Keith Haring, Olafur Eliasson, Michael Snow, Ray Johnson, Andy Warhol, Hans-Peter Feldman, Paul McCarthy/Jason Rhoades and more.   This exhibition does point out the issue with showing artist...
