Chris Komater photographs the male body, close-up and abstract, and then assembles the multiple images into large semi-abstract arrays.  His artistic gaze is focused on men with body types that have been given little positive visibility in the mainstream or as artistic subject matter: hirsute, mature, differently-proportioned.  Komater brings us in for a closer look at these bodies, and asks us to reconsider them as a objects worthy of our gaze.

Chris Komater lives and works in San Francisco.  His work has been exhibited at the Jan Kesner Gallery, Los Angeles; the Bernard Toale Gallery, Boston; and the Patricia Sweetow Gallery, The LAB, and Haines Gallery, San Francisco, among other venues.  Komater is the recipient of a 1995 WESTAF-NEA Regional Visual Arts Fellowship; and a 1998 San Francisco Arts Commission Art-In-Transit Grant.
