Artist Statement and Bio

Trixie has been painting for over thirty years.  While living in Hong Kong for many years, she taught beginner and intermediate oils and acrylics at the Hong Kong YWCA to women from all over the world.  In New York City, Trixie painted at the Art Students' League of New York with the well-known Post Abstract Expressionist Larry Poons as her advisor. She is a member of the National Association of Women Artists as well as various other artists’ organizations.  She has participated in many group exhibitions in NYC, Nashville, and Hong Kong and has also had several solo exhibitions.  Having begun her career as a portrait artist, Trixie is an abstract expressionist painter through and through but still enjoys an occasional delve into the figurative.

I usually begin a painting with no real agenda.  One line or one color speak to me and lead me to the next.  Believing in serendipity, I welcome and  accentuate the unexpected. Believing in myself as an artist has helped me to value myself in all areas of my life! When I stopped trying to please people with my painting, and began expressing my true self. That is what painting is all about for me, connecting with my inner self at a subconscious level, and bringing it to the canvas without my thinking mind getting in the way.

Two of my favorite pieces of advice come from my former abstract painting advisor, Larry Poons. “Trixie, try to say good-bye the way you say hello!” And, “If you know what you are going to paint then you have already painted the painting in your head.”
