Cheng Xiang was born in 1973 in Chongqing, China. He graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Chongqing, in 1998 with B.A. in Sculpture. He teaches in Southwest Jiaotong University.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of Cheng Xiang's sculptures is the innocence embodied within each work.  It is an aura that finds its origin in Cheng's ability to place the figures in a situation, or rather, in a moment that exemplifies their rightful state of existence - a young girl reveling in the youthful, exuberant joy of skipping rope, a bronze horse frozen in a kinetic pose amid a space one could easily imagine as a lush field or an expansive plateau, a young woman draped in an innocent yet feminine robe, looking with hopeful, idealistic eyes into the heavens.  The energy expressed so skillfully in the figures by an up-drawn foot, the curving bend of a torso, a neck, or the looping line of a flailing jump rope adds to their unselfconscious bliss of simply being.
