Its Over and Its On

Its over. My solo exhibition, PolyChromatic ,which was on display this past month at the Elmhurst Artists Guild has come to a close. Some might say this a sad thing. I admit am a bit sad that has had its run. It was an amazing experience. But not to sad. Why? As good fortune would have it the show came down and was relocated to new digs in a great space in downtown Chicago the very next day. Due to a great opportunity provided by Pop-Up Art Loop, an initiative of the Chicago Loop Alliance, a... [more]

PolyChromatic Opening reception reception

Opening reception recption.Yes .Thats tough to say. But the word success is not. The opening reception for the PolyChromatic exhibition was this weekend and the reception from the art community was a huge smash. We had a large crowd come out and brave Chicagos winter elements to see this show at the beautiful Elmhurst Artist Guild Gallery and they were not disappointed. Great art, food and conversation were abundant.Works such as the large and bold signature piece PolyChromatic stunned many... [more]

Whats Next? Lull ? No Way

Here we are getting long into summer and my adventures as an emerging artist continue. Since I started this its been a wild ride and I have learned tons of lessons. Ive entered several juried competitions, have been rejected more than I care to remember, actually gotten into a few exhibitions , won some awards and I even landed my first solo exhibition. Even after all these great things one of the lessons Ive learned in the business of being an artist is that you always have to ask yourself... [more]

ArtPrize - I Made it In

First off- what is ArtPrize? Some people have of heard of it and some havent. I myself hadnt heard of this unique competition until a few weeks ago. Heres what they say: ArtPrize is a radically open competition. Open to any artist in the world who can find space. Open to anybody in Grand Rapids, Michigan who wants to create a venue. Open to a vote from anyone who attends. After reading that and scanning the site I decided I had to go for it. I read the rules, jumped in and began my... [more]

Unbelieveable!! We have a winner!!

Unbelieveable.I was stunned when I heard my name. Attending the opening  reception for the Elmhurst Artists Guild Summer show I was called out. My peice "Verde" had garnered a 2nd place award in the show.Another up in the 2010 emerging artist saga.  Not only did it get an award but it was also recognized by the judge as a serious work  that had all the right stuff: contemporary, mainstream, great color ,great composition and in touch with current art trends. She even mentioned the commercial... [more]

My status as an emerging artist is legitimate…

Back in March I posted this first blog entry: “ I've Begun to "emerge" as an artist. So now what? So here I am, an emerging artist blogging on the web. My intent is to share the ups and downs ( Ive already gotten a few of each already) as I begin my journey as a dedicated fine artist. Using the philosophy that I need lots of  good research, a well outlined plan, the unknown variable of luck (being in the right spot at the right time wont hurt either) and some serious commitment to my efforts... Artworks380 at Art in the Park in Elmhurst

Ok this post is a few days late.A week to be exact. But I can finally say it. I’ve done the first art festival. It was a bit intimidating at first but now that its over all I can say is wow!! There was so much to do and it never seemed to end. If I hadn’t had the support and assistance from my wonderful  wife I don’t know if I’d of met the deadline. But through determination and persistence we did it. Its over. All I can say is what a great experience and what a huge success. Lots of lessons... [more]

Facing Some Facts about an Emerging Artists Life: All the things you don’t want to hear…but need to

I’ve put together a list of things I’ve discovered since I started this endeavor full time. It’s  a small list because no one wants to hear it all. If we did it might freeze us in our tracks and we’d never move on. And I’ll be the first to say this too. There are exceptions to every rule I put on this list. These things aren’t set in stone. But it’s important as an emerging artist that when you begin to pursue your career in visual arts, you have a clear idea of what some of the realities are... [more]

A Giclee?

I was in the gallery the other day and several people had gathered around a piece of work I was fortunate enough to have on display. As I listened there was a conversation about the work, the style, the bold colors etc. But even more interesting was the sidebar discussion regarding how the work was made. What was it?  A litho, a woodblock or  a screenprint? It was really vibrant, crisp edged, overall a very tight composition. Airbrushing perhaps? When I revealed the work was produced using the... Traditional ? Digital ? Artist.

As digital art becomes recognized as a serious form of mainstream art you have to wonder what will become of the traditional artist.  Will the traditional art process fade into obscurity? Will the traditional artist go the way of the buffalo? Will the purely digital artist be the future? First of all I firmly believe that in the world of art, the computer is simply another tool. Granted it’s a very unique tool but a tool nonetheless. Just like a brush. You use it to express yourself. In... [more]

Original vs Print

Original vs Print. These two words can spark a debate and draw a line in the sand for some artist. Is one better than the other? Is one a real form of art? Why do we have prints at all? Well lets see. Original is exactly how it sounds. Its an original creation. Its paintings created using oil and acrylic on board or canvas, pastels to paper, pen and ink on paper, watercolor etc. Then we have prints. Prints are reproductions of original designs. Ive read where some artist go so far as to call... [more]

What Im learning about the term "emerging"

In chronicling my adventures as an emerging artist., I've already mentioned an up. Although small to many, was a huge up for me as an emerging artist.  To be fair, honest and to keep the balance - here is my first down. I've come to learn lately (the hard way -and thus why it's a down in the adventure book) that the term emerging is a bad word in the art world because it depends completely on your age. That's right, I said age. Not art. Here's the deal. The word emerging by one of its many... [more]
