The first time I encountered Jan De Cock's lacquered steel frames and wooden planks was at Repromotion, the artist's 2010 solo show at Galerie Fons Welters. I remember wandering across the gallery space for a while, looking not as much at the sculptures as through them, since they framed and expanded each other in an intricate game of perspectives and shapes. Such fractalization of the room intrigued me and, as I took several pictures, I grew further fascinated by my own reframing of De Cock's... [more]

This year sees the first ‘Mind the Book’, the successor to ‘Het Andere Boek’, with a focus on ‘the world’. Often, it’s a little of both. Yet, somehow I still look forward to these unwieldy offerings each year, figuring, at the very least, I’ll come out with some status quo of the young and unsigned and the older and under-shown. Usually it works out. So, when I was sifting through... [more]

When I’m visiting a lot of galleries, my experiences are often filtered through what I’ve recently seen. Sometimes this can be irritating and inappropriate, but occasionally exhibitions operate like perfect compliments, informing my reception and positioning one another within contemporary artistic practice. Though their exhibitions appear dramatically different, I could not help but draw connections between the sculptural works of Jan De Cock and David Jablonowski, showing a few... [more]
