My practice is a search for the gestalt - a reductive exercise in rendering the three dimensional into the two dimensional pictorial plane. It includes paintings, drawings, and site-specific installations all investigating the organization of space with references to contemporary iconic architecture and influenced by the tension between the natural and built environments.
For me, the canvas is as important as the paint applied. A struggle to control and relinquish are persistent drives in the process. I embrace pliage, or folding, as both concept and formal process - allowing for chance, establishing order. Raw, un-stretched canvas goes through a transformation of sorts through folding, creasing, heavy ground application, more folding, scraping, drying, shrinking, “tanning”, stretching, more painting. Simplicity of imagery belies complexity of methodology; the archaeology of which is revealed only upon quiet meditation of compositions.
More recent paintings “sample” the architecture of contemporary art museums, cultural centers, and the contemporary art within these structures, the folds imbue each canvas with an inherent grid or “scaffold” upon which to construct and compose my paintings. Ultimately, these works are an interpretive study of the nuances of architecture, revealing the intrinsic rhythm of the built environment by distilling structure and space to its most essential elements.
