The Director of Communications & Outreach works under the supervision of the Executive Director and in collaboration with Headlands staff to design and implement an integrated communications strategy and audience engagement program for Headlands Center for the Arts. - Management or supervisory experience required.
- Mastery of Microsoft Office (or an equivalent), and FileMaker Pro (or similar database system) is required; proficiency in Wordpress, G Suite, and Asana or other task-management system is strongly preferred; working knowledge of MailChimp, Survey Monkey, Eventbrite, and Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop preferred.
- Experience and confidence identifying, selecting, and working with contracted designers, photographers, publicists, and other vendors preferred.
- Interest in and familiarity with contemporary art of any and all disciplines is preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal communications skills, including active listening and effective collaboration skills, and a team-player attitude.
- Due to our Marin Headlands location, reliable vehicle access is required.
RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:
Leadership Team Member
- As a member of the Headlands’ leadership team, work cross-departmentally with directors to support the organization’s mission, goals, and initiatives, including the implementation of a new, 6-year Master Plan.
- Supervise the Communications & Outreach Coordinator and communications interns.
- Oversee the Designer in Residence Program and manage the work of the Designer in Residence.
- Develop annual department work plans and oversee implementation.
- Along with the Director of Programs, serve as staff co-lead for the Audience Engagement Committee; work closely with the committee chair to set agendas and maintain working relationships; manage biannual meetings and Committee communications.
- Represent Communications & Outreach at Board meetings and externally as assigned.
Marketing & Communications
- Lead cross-departmental efforts to ensure comprehensive, audience-driven communications and outreach around Headlands’ organizational profile and programs, including setting long-term and seasonal goals, strategies, and plans.
- Develop strategies to expand Headlands’ visibility and reputation locally, nationally, and internationally.
- Shepherd the Headlands brand and oversee messaging.
- Devise and implement strategies to engage and grow Headlands’ audiences.
- Oversee strategy, content, and development for Headlands’ external marketing and communications. Develop and execute production and distribution of print and electronic materials (website, email marketing, and social media).
- Manage a team of external designers, web developers, videographers, writers, editors, print brokers, and other vendors to develop and produce print and electronic materials.
- Write copy for print and online publication; edit and proofread public-facing written materials.
- Oversee and maintain institutional style guides.
- Oversee calendar postings and ads on various arts and culture sites.
- Manage distribution and mailing of posters, calendars, and other marketing materials.
- Track, report, and analyze audience metrics; develop and implement surveys and other audience research, reporting significant findings and trends.
- Determine, acquire, and manage photographic, written, and audio documentation and permissions needed for publicity, program archives, and publications.
- Working with Programs, manage and proactively establish organizational programmatic and promotional partnerships.
- Develop annual media relations plan and oversee implementation, in tandem with a publicist when appropriate.
- Cultivate and expand relationships with local and national media professionals.
- Develop and oversee maintenance of press materials, contact lists, and online press room; track metrics relating to press visibility and report to leadership.
- Conduct tours for visitors including special interest groups and members of the press.
Administrative Functions and Other Projects
- In tandem with the Operations department, develop and manage annual department budget.
- Oversee database as it relates to mailing list management, event attendance records, audience research and segmentation, media contacts, and departmental vendors.
- Participate in the database task force.
- Maintain photography and communications collateral archives.
- Manage e-communications, social media, and online surveying platforms.
- Employee needs to be able to sit for extended periods of time.
- Employee must be able to assist with events, which includes occasional lifting and moving of audiovisual equipment and furniture.
- Due to the location of our campus, employees must drive and have a vehicle.
Compensation and Office Culture
- Salary range: $68,000–$73,000, negotiated based on experience.
- 11 paid holidays annually.
- Three weeks paid time off per year, increases to four weeks at year 2.
