This is 5 Questions. Each week, we send five questions to an artist featured in Under the Radar, our weekly email highlighting the best art on the ArtSlant network. This week we seek answers from Nina Vichayapai.
What are you trying to communicate with your work?
I am interested in revealing the ways in which our environments embody experiences of migration. Whether the migrations are our own, our parents’ or ancestors’, or of others in our societies, these movements shape landscapes and cultures everywhere. Regardless of the boundaries many nations may create through laws regarding incoming and outgoing migration, migration is an intrinsic part of human nature. The contradiction between the necessity of migration and the legislation which governments use to restrict it is something I explore in my art.
What is an artist’s responsibility?
I think every artist should determine for themselves what they feel is their responsibility. Everyone has a different calling!
Show us the greatest thing you ever made (art or not)?
My imaginary friend is Ben Stiller and when I have an art block I make comics about our adventures.
Tell us about a work you want to make but never will:
Not necessarily art, but at one point I wanted to make little boxes I would send out to galleries I wouldn’t mind being represented by. When opened, they would reveal a 3D diorama of an exhibition I would have in their space. The diorama would include scaled down versions of my installations as well as tongue-in-cheek commentary on why this show would do well in their gallery space. Little text bubbles would say things like “spectacle installation, perfect backdrop for selfies” and “easily commodifiable components.”
I considered doing this but scrapped the idea after the Austin package bombings happened…
Who are three artists we should know but probably don’t?
By no means are these artists unknown but they are of Southeast Asian background and are incredibly inspiring to me!
