Museum Mission:

As an art museum belonging to an academic institution, the dual roles of the NIU Art Museum are to contribute significantly to the university’s educational curriculum, and to provide opportunities for art education and cultural enrichment to the people of the northern Illinois community. The museum serves to educate, preserve, exhibit and enlighten by balancing the challenges of contemporary art with the riches of traditional media for a comprehensive examination of visual culture. The museum presents exhibitions from the university collections, thematic, contemporary exhibitions of the work of regional and national artists, and nationally traveling exhibitions.

As an extension of the museum’s mission to present contemporary art through the platform of thematic exhibitions, the NIU Art Museum is requesting calls for entries for one of its 2013-2014 exhibitions.

On Watching and Being Seen

This exhibition explores the voyeur and the exhibitionist in both older and contemporary works, especially work that responds to the impact of social media and technology in defining what is private and what is public.

The NIU Art museum is currently accepting submissions in all media. This call is open to all artists in the United States 18 years of age or older. Submitted artwork must be handleable by two people and fit through a single door (36” wide x 84” tall).

$30.00. Checks made out to NIU in US dollars are the only form of payment we can currently accept. Submissions that arrive without a fee will not be considered.

Monies from fees will be used to support publications and programming relevant to these thematic exhibitions. Examples of past programming (bus trips, artist lectures, workshops and film series, etc…) can be found on our website (

Please include an introductory cover letter, with your contact information (name, address, phone, email). Also include a brief written statement about how each piece fits the theme.

Submit 1 - 5 images (plus details of each as necessary), in jpeg format, 300 dpi, 1500 pixels on the smallest side. The filename for each image should include the artist’s last name and title (i.e., LastnameTitle.jpg). Do not imbed images within a photo program (i.e., Power Point, iPhoto, etc.). CD’s must be labeled neatly with the artist’s first and last name.

Video footage and/or documentation of performances may be submitted on DVD, again with an accompanying printed description of the material. DVD’s must be labeled neatly with the artist’s first and last name.

Images must be accompanied by a typewritten image list, which includes artist’s first and last name, title, date, dimensions, media of the work, and insurance value. Please also include a printed contact sheet of labeled images. Please include an appropriately sized SASE if you wish your materials to be returned to you.
