Maria Kondratiev (b. 1983, St.Petersburg; Russia)
The immediate act of mark making is the foundation for my work. The mark itself is an event; it is a clue to pre-conscious thought. What is projected may derive from a thought, a dream sequence, or what seems like nothing at all. The result is an exploration of an inner world. The images I depict are ephemeral and ambiguous yet a graphic account of the moment is always present. Through the process of building and taking away marks, I am able to give physicality to pure emotion.
Education: MA, New York University, Steinhardt Graduate School, 2011. BFA, SUNY Purchase College, School of Art+Design, 2006.
Maria Kondratiev was chosen as a Juried Select Winner in Round #2 of the Showcase Series.
