Miami Art Week Guide, Part I: Art Fairs Aplenty

by The Artslant Team
It’s impossible to keep a Miami Art Week guide “concise.” The number of fairs alone—at last count 21, —will make any list scroll on and on. So we're not even trying. Instead, we’re splitting our guide into two: one for fairs and one for everything else. This guide will get you acquainted with the city’s seasonal guests: those itinerant behemoths that turn up and transform the town for one week out of the year. Unless you’re a masochist (and who knows, you might be, we’re not judging), there’s... [more]

Trends at Moniker and The Other Art Fair: Ink and Etching

by James Loks
Producing a trend report for The Other Art Fair and Moniker is an almost impossible task given the diversity of the work on display, which is another way to say that there is a really mixed bag in terms of both quality and aspiration.  It might indeed be the best place to pick up some really good quality pictures for relatively little money, but I’ll spill the naked truth and admit that if you’re hoping to find the next big thing and make a million bucks, that isn’t going to happen here. If... [more]

Trends at Sunday Art Fair: Everyday Objects

by James Loks
I feel a little sorry for the Sunday Art Fair. As the fair for emerging art it should really be the offshoot of Frieze that shows the cutting-edge work, the small galleries, the artist run spaces, and so on.  Instead it can unfortunately feel like forgotten backwater of the whole event, stuck as it is just a little bit too far location-wise, just a bit too hidden in the basement of Westminster University, and not as big and buzzing as it could be. Which isn’t to say that you can’t see good... [more]

1:54 Trend Report: Found Objects and Photography

by James Loks
I had a sense of unease as I approached the 1:54 fair. Maïmouna Guerresi, , 2007. © Mariane Ibrahim   As I parked my bicycle all sorts of uncomfortable ideas were floating through my head about what I could and couldn’t say about African art, not least of which being the perception, dealt with by the fair’s title, that Africa is this big single thing, and not the 54 independent nations of which it’s comprised.   Wallen Mapondera, Echoes   So, putting cultural and intellectual... Basel 2015 Trends: Irony Rules at the New Rhy Art Fair

by A. Moret
In the early hours of opening day at Rhypark, a gentle rain falls upon Basel. While the sun tries to break through the overcast clouds, the weather cannot squash the fact that the city is already illuminated by art and global attention. The Rhy Art Fair is the newest addition to the fair circuit, making its Basel debut this year. Presented by the Swiss organizer Contemporary Art International Zurich (founded in 1999 and now celebrating its 17th year) Rhy Art Fair showcases emerging talent in... [more]

How Two New Satellites Challenge San Francisco's Art Fair Scene

by Leora Lutz
Aside from artMRKT, two other art fairs happened in San Francisco this past weekend: StARTup Art Fair and Parking Lot Art Fair. Each attempted to unfold controversial aspects of what it means to gather en masse, and to expose the public to a variety of artists in one place for a concentrated amount of time. The venues missed and seized opportunities, respectively, and each presented their own set of risks surrounding the art fair model.  Parking Lot Art Fair installation view, held at the... [more]

It's (OFF)icelle: FIAC Is Cool

by ArtSlant Team
There's something new happening at FIAC this year. Not exactly the quickest to catch on to a trend, the Parisian art fair has created its own satellite, with a focus on introducing new art and artists from the international scene through a showcase of 68 galleries from 14 countries. Judged by a selection panel of art historians and curators, the tangential fair's emphasis is on supporting the underdog—not only the up-and-comings, but also "outsiders" and artists who have been overlooked... Taking Up POSITIONS: Checking In With Berlin’s Newest Art Fair

by Nicole Rodríguez Woods
Kristian Jarmuschek takes a shallow breath and almost disappointedly utters, “That is the second time I’m asked about the market today. What is with everyone wanting to talk about the market?” The POSITIONS team and I are seated in the center of one of the gallery rooms of Jarmuschek+Partner on the Potsdamer Strasse discussing the upcoming launch of Berlin's newest art fair incarnation, POSITIONS Berlin. The room is lined with neat bundles of VIP invite cards and press material stacked in boxes... [more]
