Chelsea Art Museum
New York, NY 10011
The primary purpose of Chelsea Art Museum, Home of the Miotte Foundation, is to showcase modern and contemporary art through thematic exhibitions that examine current social issues. A prominent aspect of CAM’s mission is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and further research on abstract art, and in particular the work of Jean Miotte. CAM furthermore supports and showcases emerging talent in visual and performing arts.
This non-profit space in Chelsea presents rotating exhibits of contemporary work, as well as artists lectures, performance and film events. It is also home to the Jean Miotte Foundation which is dedicated to archiving, preserving, presenting and making available for exhibitions the work of Jean Miotte. Rotating selections of Miotte’s work are shown on a regular basis, as are selections from the permanent collection which includes rare holdings of such artists as Pol Bury, Mimmo Rotella, and J.P. Riopelle.
CAM’s permanent collection contains over 500 works consisting of paintings, etchings, sculptures, ceramics, and tapestries, as well as an important selection of rare books and works on paper. Highlighting decades of research on abstract art, the collection contains over 100 paintings and sculptures by Informel and Abstract Expressionist artists from Europe and the United States, including a substantial body of work by Jean Miotte, Joan Mitchell, Manuel Millares, Jean-Paul Riopelle, and many others. Affichistes, such as the Italian artist Mimo Rotella, comprise another portion of the permanent collection.
Exhibitions and Programming
Co-founder and president Dorothea Keeser describes CAM’s curatorial vision as “a commitment to art as a living entity which reacts and interacts with us and changes the way one continues to live one’s daily life.”
Recognizing the value of education, CAM compliments exhibits with a comprehensive public program consisting of artist talks, round-table discussions, curator-led tours, film screenings, and lectures. These programs are designed for children, museum visitors, and professionals, to facilitate access to, and understanding of, contemporary art as well as to inspire the next generation of artists.
Performing Arts at CAM, a highly acclaimed concert and dance performance series, features internationally renowned performance artists.
