Angles Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by artist Annie Lapin.
Engaging in a combination of painting and drawing, Lapin strives to create instability within a static image. In the artist’s own words, “The works aspire toward sanctification by hovering in suspended resolution, which I imagine might reveal the process of cognition.” Tropes of the sublime and various genres, from both kitsch and art historical epochs, interrupt and subvert one another on the canvas, allowing the viewer only moments of clarity and inklings of allusion. Employing thick and occasionally violent strokes, the paintings often look like intense collisions of cultural detritus with a chaotic aftermath that settles into something at once meaningful and mysterious.
Before receiving her MFA from UCLA in 2007, Annie received her BA from Yale University and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She will have a solo exhibition at Grand Arts in Kansas City, Missouri, in June, 2008. Her work has been exhibited in group shows at Angles Gallery, Roberts and Tilton, Daniel Weinberg Gallery, and the L.A. Weekly Annual Biennial.
