DESCRIPTION

Robert Wilhite has repeatedly used music as a metaphor with his sculptures. This is his first exhibition of drawings related to his musical sculptures.

The drawings exhibited are 2 dimensional illustrations of cubes in space emitting silent sounds. They are illustrations combining words or language with a visual vocabulary in order to represent a truly ephemeral presence, silence.

The sculptures are lightweight, lacquered, wood resonating chambers. The projected conic structures in front of them represent the symbolic gestures of real silence being cast from the openings of the volumes, as illustrated in the drawings.

In addition to his solo show at Gallery Neuartig in September 2011, Wilhite is included in various exhibitions and performances during Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945–1980’, organized by the Getty Center during the fall of 2011 and spring of 2012, celebrating an era that continues to inspire the world
