DESCRIPTION

Technology is a key component in the work of Stephan Canthal.  He began experimenting with the photographic medium while pursuing a Fine Arts degree at California State University of Long Beach.  His interest in advancing this medium and its process has led him to printing on multiple surfaces including aluminum, wood, film, and specialty papers.  As he explores the idea of printing images on different surfaces, he starts to use it to not only accent the image but to also create a communication between substrate and imagery.

For his new series, "American Dreams", he pushes the photographic envelope yet again.  This time using wood as his canvas, Canthal creates a photo transfer process on top of painted or stained wood.  merging iconic images of LA, with text and other imagery, Canthal tries to simplify his views of society.  The American Dream used to be simple; family, a car, and a house with a white picket fence.   It's twisted and evolved into a materialistic statues symbol fantasy filled with the eagerness for recognition and fame, being destroyed by the very institution that created it in the first place.   This series, "American Dreams", explores the idea of what The American Dream used to stand for and what it has evolved into.
