DESCRIPTION

Through their work, the participating artists investigate how alliances with non-human companions (microbes, pets, cyborgs) shape our existence as individuals and as a species. Human life and human culture are contingent upon and inseparable from the co-evolution of interrelated species; by examining human/non-human relationships, the art in Cohabit explores how we connect (or don’t) with non-human others. Perceiving nature through personal, cultural, scientific, or religious lenses, the artists address the increasingly difficult dichotomy between culture and nature. As they reconsider the split between nature and culture from a perspective that doesn’t presuppose human superiority or domination, they question how humanity will continue to evolve in a multi-species environment.
