cifo, the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, is a non-profit organization, established in 2002 by Ella Fontanals Cisneros and her family to foster cultural exchange among the visual arts. cifo is dedicated to the support of emerging and mid-career contemporary multidisciplinary artists from Latin America, who are challenging the established boundaries that define much contemporary art today.
cifo’s exhibition space hosts a programmed calendar of activities and shows, and the foundation offers grants and commissions to contemporary artists from Latin America. Each year, ten emerging artists from Latin America are awarded a grant, and participate in a group show at cifo. Artists are nominated for our programs by an Advisory Committee of renowned curators and artists from around the world.
After rigorous study of each nominee, cifo’s Selection Committee and Board of Directors makes the final selection of ten artists. In addition, the work of two mid-career artists will be showcased in an exhibition produced by cifo’s Commissions Program.
cifo is committed to broadening the global understanding of work by contemporary artists from Latin America, and moving beyond the traditional paradigms and stereotypes associated with Latin American art.
