DESCRIPTION

"Swimming Upstream", an exhibition of works by 17 New York and Miami-based artists, will take place at the Art @ O gallery space from November 3rd to 30th. Each participant, has individually interpreted the show's theme. The works are aquatic in focus, centered on the constant struggle of the female artist, or a combination of both. The exhibition encompasses diverse mediums--- including video, collage, photography, and painting--by artists who range from the well-established to those showing work for the first time.

The impetus for the show, co-curated by Cat Del Buono and Diana Leidel, came from a Del Buono video which is included in this exhibition. It is a floor installation in which swimmers ceaselessly stroke by underfoot in what appears to be an underground pool. The works range from Gabriela Vainsencher's "And There I Was Fulfilling Myself in Some Amazing Way'" (a watercolor of a fishes' contemplation), to Kim Butler's photo of a gas mask-clad damsel in a river, Toa Castellanos' "Monsters" collage of a makeshift woman, and Diana Leidel's "Swimming Lesson" black on black digital image.

Other artists in "Swimming Upstream" are Amanda Church, Gillian Crosson, Jade Doskow, Teresa Forsch, Veronica Frenning, Gina Margillo, Estelle Nichols, Sarah Palmer, Naomi Tarantal, Anja Wade, and Antonia Wright.
