"Swimming Upstream"\, an exhib ition of works by 17 New York and Miami-based artists\, will take place at the Art @ O gallery space from November 3rd to 30th. Each participant\, has individually interpreted the show's theme. The works are aquatic in focus\ , centered on the constant struggle of the female artist\, or a combination of both. The exhibition encompasses diverse mediums--- including video\, c ollage\, photography\, and painting--by artists who range from the well-est ablished to those showing work for the first time.\n
The impetus for the show\, co-curated by Cat Del Buono and Di
ana Leidel\, came from a Del Buono video which is included in this exhibiti
on. It is a floor installation in which swimmers ceaselessly stroke by unde
rfoot in what appears to be an underground pool. The works range from Gabri
ela Vainsencher's "And There I Was Fulfilling Myself in Some Amazing Way'"
(a watercolor of a fishes' contemplation)\, to Kim Butler's photo of a gas
mask-clad damsel in a river\, Toa Castellanos' "Monsters" collage of a make
