A collaborative project for the tenants of 92 White Post Lane, E9, Tower Hamlets Borough, which began in 2010, Allotments questions the politics and power at play within conventional exhibition-making practices, inverting spatial and social hierarchies.

There is no theme for the exhibition and participants are free to make/create/bring anything from ‘art’ to ‘non-art’ as long as it fits in a 1.5 x 1.5 metre square or ‘allotment’. These spaces will be chalked out and numbered prior to the works being delivered to the gallery. The gallery becomes a ‘social space’ questioning notions of curating and artistic pedigree. Occupants of units who do not identify themselves as artists are also invited to participate. Allotments not ‘claimed’ by tenants for whatever reason will be left empty. Spaces are allocated by picking a number from a pot injecting elements of ‘chance’ and ‘play’ into the curatorial process. In this way a grid of allotments will be formed that is structured yet undefined; relationships between artworks reflect a diversity of approaches to what art is and how it should be displayed and interpreted while promoting a sense of community for the tenants.

This year for the first time a participatory area will invite the general public to explore the idea of ‘Drawing As A Museum’ where visitors can make drawings in response to the works in the exhibition and so contribute to the creation of a live ‘museum’. Drawing materials and paper will be provided by the gallery. In this way the boundary between the artist and the viewer is questioned incorporating the visitor’s act of interpretation into the exhibition itself. All drawings will be hung in a dedicated display area. This ‘installation’ extends the ideas of Allotments regarding the re-distribution and sharing of space and the creation of community outside the gallery into the public sphere creating a dialogue between ‘inside’ and ‘outside’. Modeling ‘transparency’ and ‘bordelessness’ as positive agents for social cohesion and change, Allotments invites you to celebrate the idea of ‘community’ in the context of a dramatically changing local landscape namely Hackney Wick, next-door to Olympic Park, in the lead-up to and during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
