A Piece of Paper
This show is about the manifold potentials of 'A Piece of Paper', the uses and misuses that those who come at it obliquely may discover and rediscover. Each artist here has forged distinct practices across a range of media, but each has found a new freedom in a return to paper. But why paper? Certainly, it is the first material most children are allowed to work with: to felt-tip, crumple and tear. It elicits seismic cultural leaps: in the twentieth century, the act of collage revolutionized painting, sculpture, film and graphic design. Without hyperbole, we might claim that paper lies at the core of human civilization (whatever you think of that term). The tension between paper's core place in an artist's salad years and within human culture runs through the core of this exhibition.
