Chelsea Futurespace is delighted to present Re-make/Re-model an exhibition bringing together a diverse group of artists whose work challenges traditional processes of printmaking. The exhibition takes its title from a song by Roxy Music; the use of samples, structure, and concrete sound in the songwriting and recording techniques of Brian Eno and Bryan Ferry seems to resonate with the artists in this exhibition who deal with material, form, found imagery, and fragments of the culture in which they are surrounded. Emphasised is the blurry boundary between painting and sculpture and the prevalence of image and collage, both relevant motions in contemporary visual art.
Contemporary printmaking is not confined to one type of media or technique of image production but rather describes an approach to dealing with imagery. The artists in Re-make/Re-model work with the notion of printmaking, producing images, which might best be described as a form of collage. Whether imitating the visual aspect of the printing technique, or extending the practical applications of printmaking, the artworks, processes and ideas here are reassessed and moulded into new forms. Presenting the viewer with a diverse collection of concepts and visual language Re-make/Re-model demonstrates the encompassing approach to image making inherent in printmaking.
Away from their individual working spaces and practices, the artists in Re-make / Re-model now come together at Chelsea Futurespace where their works combine to form new narratives through juxtaposition with each other. This assemblage is reflected in the accompanying publication that includes contributions that elaborate further on the notion of collage through text based works containing fragments of conversations as well as narrative based writings. There are also two texts that look in further detail at the process of image making in the context of contemporary art practices.
Resonating, reassessing, re-moulding, much like Walter Benjamin’s description of Angelus Novus, His face is turned toward the past…. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future…
A fully illustrated publication will be available to accompany Re-make/Re-model with contribution from Sam Austen, David Ferry, Debra Welch and Christina Wrege.
