“PROJECT SERIES 40: AMANDA ROSS-HO”
“Project Series 40: Amanda Ross-Ho The Cheshire Cat Principle” will be on view January 23 through April 11, 2010, at the Pomona College Museum of Art in Claremont. An opening reception will be held at the Museum on Saturday, January 23 from 4-6 p.m. Amanda Ross-Ho will present a public lecture about her work on Tuesday, March 2 at 10:30 a.m. in the Museum.
For “Project Series 40: Amanda Ross-Ho The Cheshire Cat Principle,” Ross-Ho will present a new site-specific installation dealing with ideas of visibility and the mutability and materiality of context. Ross-Ho’s exhibition is accompanied by a publication, which will also function as a work in the exhibition. The publication is designed by Dexter Sinister with an essay by writer Angie Keefer.
Ross-Ho creates paintings, sculpture, and installation work that examine the boundaries of presentation space, the direct and indirect products of creative expression, and the connectivity of the visual world. The artist’s installations also reflect sociopolitical and formal concerns that range from renegotiating definitions of high art versus craft to exploring the dimensional tension between sculpture, painting, and photography.
Ross-Ho’s collages, found objects, and large-scale cut canvas paintings — arranged according to idiosyncratic lexicons from personal symbols — become contextual clues that reveal their materiality both literally, as accumulated detritus, and figuratively, as excised space and material that challenge ideas of visibility and the physical manifestation of the residue of studio production. Ross-Ho invents puzzles out of non-sequiturs to seek congruence in seemingly incongruous situations, whether visual or spatial. Her work inhabits those interstitial spaces between understanding and confusion, adding mysterious allure to her installations’ overall effect.
“Project Series 40” is Ross-Ho’s first solo museum exhibition. Her most recent gallery exhibitions include Cherry and Martin, Los Angeles and Hoet Bekaert Gallery, Belgium. Group exhibitions include “Index: Conceptualism in California from the Permanent Collection” at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and “Make Room” at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Atlanta. Ross-Ho was also included in the 2008 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
The Project Series, organized by Museum Curator Rebecca McGrew, presents Southern California artists in focused exhibitions. The purpose of the series is to bring to Pomona College art that is experimental and introduces new forms, techniques, or concepts. During each exhibition, participating artists spend time on campus working with faculty and students in relevant disciplines. A catalogue accompanies each exhibition. The Project Series is supported in part by the Pasadena Art Alliance.

The Pomona College Museum of Art houses a substantial permanent collection as well as serves as a gallery for the display of temporary exhibitions. Important holdings include the Kress Collection of 15th- and 16th-century Italian panel paintings; more than 5,000 examples of Pre-Columbian to 20th-century American Indian art and artifacts; and a large collection of American and European prints, drawings, and photographs, including works by Francisco de Goya, José Clemente Orozco and Rico Lebrun.
