Los Angeles, CA – Art & Mayhem Gallery is proud to present “Seven Gates,” a solo exhibition by Los Angeles painter, Jessica M. O’Dowd/ Ravenous Art.

In the latest body of work, the artist explores the seven gates of hell. The dark, glossy, surreal paintings on wood depict souls receiving eternal punishment in the dreamlike rivers and forests of hell. Icy and bright colors against a black abyss suggest the feelings of loneliness that come with abandoning all hope.

But the souls’ faces reveal unflappable beings bravely accepting their fate with expressions ranging from determination to devilish delight. It’s as if they chose their crimes with full knowledge of the punishment that would follow.

Although Biblical in its imagery, the story told by the work is more literature than Catholicism. The artist did not have a religious upbringing, but at a young age she heard tales of Catholicism from the outer circles of the family, and her imagination was sparked by the gravity of the stories, and the intensity of the accompanying visuals. Catholicism, along with Faust, Beowulf, horror movies and heavy metal music, sparked Ravenous Art’s fascination with all things meant to scare children and control behavior & the instinctive rebellion against such constraints.

Originally from the Los Angeles area, Ravenous Art holds a BFA from Loyola Marymount University, where she was selected by Disney Imagineering to be a collaborative muralist for a city outreach program. She then completed her education at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has shown in California at The Long Beach Museum, Jan Baum Gallery, 01 Gallery, Galaxy Gallery and Laband Art Gallery &, in Chicago at Hyde Park Art Center, Gallery 2 and Gallery 4, and in Stockholm, Sweden at Båt Klubben Gallerie and Illuminations Gallerie. Her work has also been featured in Bunim-Murray productions. She currently lives in West Hollywood.
