Gallery 1927 is pleased to announce the opening of Under the Auspices featuring new works by Kiki Johnson and Christina Ondrus. The exhibition opens Thursday October 8, 2009 with a public
reception from 6-9pm. The exhibition will be on view through November 3, 2009 from 9am-7pm daily.

Ritual offers a method for understanding through action. A series of gestures, utterances or silence
opens a path to understanding that the rational, analytic and linguistic may often obfuscate. Symbols
and icons utilize a similar power to condense knowledge. A divine or prophetic token serves as
shorthand for a history of belief.

Under the Auspices brings together the work of Kiki Johnson and Christina Ondrus. Both artists look to
the esoteric in search of forgotten knowledge with the hope of illuminating the present. A uniquely
American metaphysical history emerges through each artist’s investigation and conflation of ritual and
symbolic objects.

Kiki Johnson’s meticulous graphite renderings utilize symbols and myths of early Americana and the
great age of whaling, where superstition abounds. Every object and tool seems imbued with lore.
Subjects such as sailors and witches float side by side, revealing how these two apparently dissimilar
subjects are in fact treated as equals within historical discourse.

Christina Ondrus’
sculptural arrangements draw upon the remnants and outgrowths of the 1960’s
counterculture and its search for spiritual meaning. These eclectic works integrate seminal texts,
diagrammatic guidelines, paintings and talismans that bridge references to Minimalism, head-culture,
New Age thought and the American strain of rationalized mysticism.

Under the Auspices juxtaposes each artist’s work in the gilt cases of Gallery 1927 at the historic Fine
Arts Building, enabling the viewer to see commonalities in signifiers whose specifics are disparate;
where meaning shifts between specific and general but often shares a common aesthetic, and
perhaps divine, root.

Kiki Johnson received her BFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2007 and recently
completed a residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 2009. She has exhibited at Artist Curated
Projects, Compact Space, Gallery 1927, and Sea and Space Explorations. She lives and works in Los
Angeles, CA.

Christina Ondrus received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2009, and her BFA
from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2000. Her work has shown in Los Angeles, New York, London and Switzerland. She lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
