Sleepwalking in Los Angeles
Tropico de Nopal Gallery-Art Space presents Sleepwalking in Los Angeles, a new body of work by artist Poli Marichal depicting Los Angeles in an eclectic mixture of dream and reality showing a keen perception of the city she has called home for the past 20 years.
Sleepwalking in Los Angeles is a new series of paintings that express Marichal's ability to fuse real and surreal, the imagined and perceived, the gestural and chromatic, as well as the social and mythological into a personal iconography-daydream state-journey of discovery. "The idea to do a series inspired by the City of Los Angeles has been gnawing at me for years. I've taken hundreds of pictures while either walking or driving through different neighborhoods, many of which serve me as notes and a framework for departure." One can see that Poli Marichal understands the pulse of Los Angeles. Her work conveys a specific reality - homelessness, construction sites and workers, freeways and cityscapes. Yet, it also expresses what she refers as "the spaces in between": the beautiful colors of the L.A.'s sunsets giving splendor to a populated but often lonely city, its majestic palm trees persevering all around and also serving as shelters, neighborhood balloon vendors floating above in the sky.
Poli Marichal is an artist and filmmaker. Originally from Ponce, Puerto Rico she has lived and worked in Los Angeles for twenty years producing, participating and teaching art. Marichal has a B.A in Printmaking from the School of Fine Arts of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture and an MFA in Film from Massachusetts College of Art. Her work has been exhibited in solo and collective exhibitions in the United States, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Europe. Two of her experimental films were selected for the exhibition Big as Life, An American History of 8mm Films at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Marichal's paintings, prints and/or videos are in numerous private and public collections.
Sleepwalking in Los Angeles will be on view through May 30th. A Conversation with the Artist evening is scheduled for Thursday, May 14, 7:30PM, and another to show her videos will also take place during the run of the show.
