Opening Saturday, April 22, 3 – 5 PM
Matthew Marks is pleased to announce an exhibition of new sculpture by Rebecca Warren in his galleries at 1062 North Orange Grove and 7818 Santa Monica Boulevard. This is the British artist’s first one-person exhibition in Los Angeles and includes thirteen sculptures made for this gallery, all shown here for the first time.
At 1062 North Orange Grove, seven hand-painted bronze sculptures are arranged on custom painted pedestals. The forms and heights of these sculptures, which vary from four to approximately six feet, directly invoke the human figure.
The sculptures at 7818 Santa Monica Boulevard are more abstract. They have been welded together from sheets of solid steel, while the wall-mounted work features pompoms illuminated by a curved tube of pink neon.
Outside the gallery Warren has installed The Three (2017), a hand-painted bronze figure with a bow in her hair. At over fourteen feet tall, it is the largest work in the exhibition.
Rebecca Warren (b. 1965) lives and works in London. Her work has been the subject of numerous one-person museum exhibitions, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Serpentine Gallery in London. In 2010 she had simultaneous exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Renaissance Society in Chicago, and the following year her work was included in the Venice Biennale. In 2015 she was commissioned by the Dallas Museum of Art to make a large-scale sculpture, which was permanently installed outside the museum last year.
Rebecca Warren is on view at 1062 North Orange Grove and 7818 Santa Monica Boulevard from April 8 to June 17, 2017, Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
