DESCRIPTION

Organized by Chief Curator Helen Molesworth, Selections from the Permanent Collection: 1940 - 1980 presents an installation focused on significant movements in 20th Century art. Featuring important and rarely seen works from MOCA's holdings, the exhibition explores work made by the students and faculty of Black Mountain College, as well as historically significant examples of abstract expressionism, hard-edge and monochrome painting, conceptual art, and documentary photography. Also on view is part of MOCA's collection of Mark Rothko paintings. The exhibition includes works by Josef Albers, John Baldessari, John Chamberlain, Ellsworth Kelly, Lee Lozano, Helen Levitt, Danny Lyon, Agnes Martin, Senga Nengudi, Kenneth Noland, Robert Overby, Dorthea Rockburne, Betye Saar, Robert Smithson, Emerson Woelffer, and numerous others.
