DESCRIPTION
A visual dialogue bridging emerging and established African-American artists.

In honor of African-American History Month, the Pounder-Kone Art Gallery and
Avenue 50 Studio collaborate in curating an exhibition of works featuring
established and emerging artists from the African-American community. Our
exhibition, Conversance gives us a glimpse into the African-American
experience through visual interpretations of a culture rich in heritage and
expression.

The Encarta World English Dictionary describes con·ver·sance as ³knowledge
of or familiarity with something². Each of our exhibiting artists is not
only clearly knowledgeable in his or her chosen media, but also has a deep
understanding of the human struggle, tragedies and triumphs the
commonalities shared by all cultures.

As we cross cultural boundaries to share in the universality of compassion
for humanity, challenges to injustice, and a generosity of spirit, we
celebrate the outstanding contributions our Conversance artists have made to
change stereotypes and biased thoughts. We join with them on a cultural
journey towards transformation, a transformation rich in cultural knowledge
and reflective of a Los Angeles experience that is, in essence, universal.
