"Belongings" within "Actions, Conversations, and Interactions"
Los Angeles, CA 90027
Most all of us desire some sense of belonging, as intangible and transitory as it may be. It is natural to look for some feelig of rootedness within the larger - at times unpredictable - unfolding of our lives. Often, inanimate objectes become the locus of memories or connection, almost as if the object itself has absorbed some of the qualities of a time, place, or a particular feeling. A belonging bay be reassuring to its owner. The loss of such an object may signify a much larger loss.
Currently, many people are redefining their relationships with their belonging(s) - downsizing, moving, organizing, relinquishing - as they adjust to changing life circumstances. Tight economic times cause us to think more intently about what we really need.
For this project, seven artists were each given a yard of muslin, a tiny mirror, and a small handmade book (to use as a starting point) and asked to consider their sense of belonging(s).
