Aztlan'12 En La Mixla
Aztlan'12 En La Mixla, is the 10th annual Chicano Art exhibit held at dA Center for the Arts in Pomona. It was Chicano artist/activist Gilbert "Magu" Lujan who originally made the suggestion to preface each show with "Aztlan" because the art work was really about a sense of place. Aztlan is Mezo-America's mythological land that occupies Northern Mexico and the entire South-West quarter of North America. All of the regions within this mythological area share many things in common, but in general they all share an underlying Spanish and Native Mexican/American cultural heritage. This year's Aztlan title, En La Mixla, continues with the theme beyond "retrospective," which explores the idea that as Chicano culture is Mezo-American culture being assimilated into North-American culture, the reverse is also true. All exhibiting artists in this years Aztlan show reflect the cultural mix of Aztlan.
