about MARK HOSMER:
Painter Mark Hosmer has been specializing in night scenes since 1989, using a hard-edged realism to render his subjects, which include houses, commercial buildings, street scenes, and an occasional interior or landscape. Starting as an amateur photographer in high school, he became frustrated with the difficulty of depicting on film the wide range of light and dark common to nocturnal images.
He experimented with the use of multiple photos of various exposure times as reference for his paintings, combining the best of lighter and darker images to give the effect of viewing the scene in person. Later, the advent of digital photography and photo-editing software made this easier, but Hosmer says "I always have to be on guard against painting a picture of a photograph. I have to keep going back to the original location for a dose of reality."
While his method may sound technical, he chooses his subject matter for its emotional impact, whether it be serene, mysterious, forlorn or threatening. "The idea is to reproduce for the viewer my emotional reaction to the subject. I could do it with an expressionistic style, but I prefer to let the subject speak for itself."
Hosmer studied with his father, Donald J. Hosmer, who was also a painter; and at Palomar College with Roy David Rodgers, whom he credits with "getting me to see myself as a serious artist."
His work has been shown at the San Diego Art Institute, Los Angeles County Museum of Art Sales and Rental Gallery, Debra Owen Gallery in San Diego, and the Orange County and Del Mar Fairs.
Hosmer lives and works in Anaheim, California.
