The sky is alive, it is eternal, it summons dreams of flying and achieving lofty heights: the sky’s the limit. It is omnipresent, always accessible, there for but a glance, embracing us from above during our every waking moment.
In our modern, crowded environment of buildings and sprawl, the sky is the only place that remains where space is at a premium, where light and water have enough room to play and create rainbows. Where prisms dance and sing.
Clouds call it their playground, as they slide and swing, tumble and twist, challenging our imaginations with their diversity of form, bulging into rainstorms, or gently painting the celestial canvas with trails of their wispy white fingertips.
The sky holds the unimaginable: the stars, the blazing sun, comets that whir by, distant visions of galaxies and other universes. Yet in our busy urban lives, we rarely look up and appreciate that vast blue landscape…except perhaps when we need to sigh and catch our breaths, or are stopped in our tracks by a sunset’s fiery glow.
Since the beginning of humankind, artists have used the heavens for inspiration. The Santa Monica Annenberg Gallery will celebrate the natural wonder of the sky in its current exhibition. Come reach for the stars as three artists breathe their personal interpretations into this universal theme: the fleeting, ephemeral world above their heads.
