On The Margin of Understanding
Ruth Bachofner Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Yoichi Kawamura. There will be a reception for the artist Saturday, March 3, 4-6 PM.
Yoichi Kawamura’s second solo exhibition at the gallery brings together a series of Los Angeles-based photographs. His work offers a perspective of the city that orients viewers to the space directly above urban sprawl and natural vistas. Infinite spaces command the picture plane with context left to a thin slice at the bottom of the photograph. While the photographs show a specific perspective of the artist’s environment, the work gently shifts between documentation, formal vision and conceptual investigation. While the images harness the sky’s range of light and chromatic shifts, the work represents a pictorial record of the artist’s exploration on the meaning of space.
“My interests lie in the unconscious and implicit understanding of space,” Kawamura states, “yet particle physics has also discovered that space is not empty and that it holds many unsolved mysteries...For me, reality is both the seen and unseen, the conscious and the unconscious, the measured and the un-measurable, both existing side by side. I am on the margin of understanding. I am in the conscious realm looking upon the sublime, the unconscious void, with a marginal comprehension of the unseen.”
