“Twenty-one Artists Create Books,” an exhibition featuring all genres of artists’ books—unique, editioned or altered, sewn or accordion, large or small—will open at the University Art Gallery at California State University, Dominguez Hills on February 1, 2012, continuing through April 3, 2012.

Jean Clad, an award-winning Southern California curator and artist, has chosen 21 artists who have many different approaches to making books. They take chances and explore every kind of material and structure. They use familiar materials and methods while experimenting with size and usual juxtapositions of materials. Images and words (if any) reinforce the essence of the book, especially when poetry is used. Each of these books has the sensual presence of the artist’s hand and intense visual impact.

Featured are artists Julie Chen (Bay area), Mary Ellen Long, Susan Porteous of Colorado; from Long Beach: Terry Braunstein, Tini MiuraPia Pizzo, Sue Ann Robinson; Edith Abeyta and Todd Smith of Los Angeles; Rachelle Chuang and Carol Miura of Orange County; Beatriz Mejia-Krumbein (Riverside); from San Diego: Jim Machacek, Kathy Miller, Al Rodriguez, Josie Rodriguez, Sibyl Rubuttom, Al Shenk and Genie Shenk; Linda Ekstrom (Santa Monica); and Paul Johnson (United Kingdom).

In conjunction with the exhibition, the gallery will be displaying the exhibit, “Student Showcase: Design” curated by Michele Bury, chair of the Art and Design Department, and Kathy Zimmerer, University Art Gallery director. Featured will be matchbook-sized books that open out with an accordion fold, crafted by design and student art students; and dramatic large-scale theater posters and graphically oriented artists’ books created by design students.

The opening reception for the artists will be held on Feb. 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the gallery. A conversation with artist Sue Ann Robinson and guest curator Jean Clad will be held that evening at 6 p.m.

Admission is free to all gallery events. This exhibition and related events are sponsored by the Instructionally Related Activities Committee of the Associated Students, Inc.

The gallery, located in room A-107 of the LaCorte Hall building on the CSU Dominguez Hills campus, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

CSU Dominguez Hills is at 1000 E. Victoria St. in Carson. Visitor parking permits cost $4 and may be purchased at yellow dispensing machines at each campus parking lot.
