Dress Rehearsal for Tea for Two
In conjunction with the current exhibition, Breach of Privacy, and the sixth annual ARTWALK Culver City, Carmichael Gallery proudly presents “Dress Rehearsal for Tea for Two.”
Tyler Matthew Oyer and Nathan Lam Vuong will publicly engage in a traditionally domestic activity, teatime. Bridging the gap between the private and the public, they make a spectacle out of a fairly banal act and turn their audience into voyeurs. While the drinking tea is domestic, those who participate in high tea know that it can often be a performance.
Performed to mimic living room music, the artists will engage in a rehearsal where Tyler will be singing “Dancing On My Own” by Robyn and Nathan will be playing “In the Mood for Love” on the violin. These choices are rooted in the idea of a public display of self-reflection and personal longing for “the other.” In this case, the other could be the audience or a remote lover. In addition to these modern classics, Tyler will be singing “Ouvre Tesyeux Bleus” by Massenet and Nathan will perform a number by Tchaikovsky. By juxtaposing these classics to more contemporary music, the artists emphasize the timelessness of the familiar human emotion, desire.
