“10th Annual Benefit Art Auction”

10 Years of Artist and Collector Support

The Huntington Beach Art Center’s 10th Annual Benefit Art Auction and Exhibition is scheduled from June 4 – June 11, 2010.  This fundraiser involves the entire arts community in a number of ways.  We start with the Meet the Artists Party on Friday, June 4th, where the community mingles with the exhibiting artists and learns more about their work.

This year’s Meet the Artists Party includes a first look at a collection of aesthetic-only art works. A purely aesthetic exhibition and sale of small art works by the auction artists.  This pre-auction night fundraiser gives you the opportunity to collect art by undisclosed artists, with names to be revealed after purchase.  In honor of the 10 year anniversary, all the 5 x 5 inch pieces have been created on aluminum panels as aluminum is the modern material for a 10 year anniversary.

The silent bidding begins on June 4th, as each art patron is issued a paddle number and can bid on their favorite piece.  Approximately 35 pieces are included in this year’s auction.  Silent bidding will continue throughout the week during this fundraiser, with many art patrons returning frequently to continue the bidding process.  If any patron cannot make it to the Art Center, a proxy bidder is available, both during the exhibition and at the Live Auction.  The community has the opportunity to collect any work of art they see – if they are lucky enough to have the winning bid on Friday, June 11th.

On Friday, June 11th both emerging and seasoned collectors will arrive for the art experience dinner and auction party.    The art experience dinner begins at 6 p.m. and is provided by our community partner Cucina Alessá.

The art experience dinner is an original piece to celebrate ten years of artist and collector support.  The curator, Darlene D. DeAngelo, is working with ten artists in this process to create the overall environment, including centerpieces and installation.  Led by Orange County artist, P. Williams, the art experience dinner will be a combination of video, performance, ambient sounds, and an adventure.  He is creating a kinetic space, alive and moving like the arts, like the seas, while simultaneously incorporating the sensation of being inside a giant drawing.

Jokingly titled, "Aquaticus" Williams’ thoughts on creating the piece are as follows:  “Basically I went aquatic because Huntington Beach is a city that starts at the nearly indistinguishable damp line in the sand at the beach. Water is the spiritual, cultural and economic lifeblood of the city, as I think art is to the HBAC”.

Patrons and collectors will be greeted by a temporary site-specific public art piece that Huntington Beach artist, Luisa Cohrs has created for the event.  The umbrella like fixture made entirely out of aluminum will welcome our supporters into the art center.  Once inside the art center building, Williams’ begins taking the guests on this journey of imagination…the umbrella fails, it doesn’t offer its support from the elements…patrons begin to be swept away under the sea.  During the dinner, original ambient sounds by artist and musician Loren Nerell, that are entirely soothing and extremely textured, as well as giving the illusion of being underwater will accompany a performance entitled, “dance of the jellyfish”.  An original video conceived by Williams completes the experience.

The auction party will follow the dinner with admission beginning at 7:30 p.m.  At 8 p.m. the party dynamically comes to life with the Live Auction.  Dr. Carl Hartman acts as auctioneer for the auction with his perfect blend of humor and vitality.

The Art Auction’s main goal is to raise money to benefit the Art Center’s exhibition and educational programs.  In addition to this fundraising goal, the Art Auction is an opportunity to begin or add to an art collection.

The 10th Annual Benefit Art Auction is chaired by Elise Hartman, a local Huntington Beach resident and Huntington Beach Art Center Foundation member.  The Foundation is the fundraising board of the Art Center.

Parking on June 11th is available on streets surrounding the Art Center and at the downtown parking garage at Main and Walnut.  A FREE Shuttle Service will be available after the close of the auction to return you to your car with your successful winning bids!

Art Work Information:

Over 40 art works will be displayed and 20 pieces will go to the Live Auction.  A variety of mediums including photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed media will be included.  Approximate starting bids range from $20 to $900.  Silent bidding opens on June 4.
